Reflections:

1.  16 Again

16 Again was originally written in the late 80's. The musical structure of this song is simple - upbeat, accessible and 80's themed. The original version had a rather meandering course and the organ like synth solo was poor. The latest version has a snappier structure and the solo has been completely re-written using a punchier JD800 sound, it is shorter and now leads into a break before the last verse. The lyrics are essentially reflective, all about how one might re-live one's youth if one could go back (naturally in a different way!) and in light of the greater understanding of life that accompanies the process of becoming older and, hopefully, wiser. In fact Gordon re-wrote the last verse and added the phrase “as your life goes by…” to make it clear this was a song about looking back at a younger age.

2.  Sometimes

Sometimes was originally written in 1987 with James both playing and providing vocals. It was rather long and had no clear solo. As a downbeat themed song an excessive amount of reverb was used to add atmosphere and the effect dominated the song. It was then re-recorded in 2023 with Gordon singing. That iteration had a faster tempo which, over time, we felt did not work as well as expected ...so it was re-recorded yet again in 2025. The original song used a combination of the Roland TR606 and TR707 for the rhythm section and the JD800 & Juno106 providing keyboard sounds. An Akai s612 had originally been used for some of the choir type samples but that machine no longer worked so similar type sounds were sourced from my Roland JV880 and SE02 synth modules. The latter versions make use of these original synthesizers but the drum section utilised samples from the original machines but sequenced within Logic itself. A Roland System 8 also now plays a key role with some of the sounds in the solo. Gordon changed the lyrics around from the original to reflect the possibility that there might come a time when the original protagonist could express his sexuality with his love interest with no restrictions. This has indeed happened over the past 40 years.

3.  Our Career

The history of Our Career is featured in depth at the bottom of the website ...including the facility to listen to the two significant previous versions.

4.  Reflections

Reflections is a new composition, recorded in 2025. The core theme underlying the song is how life changes as we age and how we come to place more value on some factors and less value on other factors ...when it comes to personal relationships. The essential message is that serendipity perhaps plays more of a role in personal relationships than we might think!

5.  Candy

Candy was written in 2023. The music for the song came together very quickly indeed ...in an afternoon! The main instruments used were a Jupiter X, my renovated JD800 and a MC101 with a few sounds from my old JV880 thrown in. The whole backing track was recorded the following day. The lyrics were initially written by James but there was no last verse, this was subsequently composed by Gordon along with some other lyrical revisions. The song is about coming out and reflects the common experience ...frequently described as being similar to how a child in a sweetshop might feel! The original song required a complete remix and remaster in 2025 due to many technical faults in the 2023 production.

6.  Still the same

Still the same was written and recorded in 1983 using tape to tape bouncing and a fairly primitive instrument setup comprising a Juno 6, a Jen SX1000 and a Roland Drumatix. Everything was played live and without the help of a sequencer. It was re-recorded in 2023 with Gordon singing but then required some STEM revision & remastering to arrive at the current version in 2025. In the original song the solo was lacklustre and so Robert was asked to construct a guitar solo from scratch which bounces off some persisting keyboard based riffs to bring the whole break together. Lyrically it is essentially a lovesong ...about an unrequited love that cannot be; but endures nonetheless.

7.  Lovesongs

Originally recorded in early Jan 1992 using a Fostex 4 track cassette deck, this song featured the wonderful sounds that the Roland JD800 could deliver. The piano was particularly memorable. The rhythm section used drum sounds from the TR707 and percussive elements from a MT32 module. It was probably James's best vocal performance ever and also included a magnificent guitar solo played by my brother, Robert. The use of a MIDIVERB digital reverb also gave the original track a bit of polish. When we re-recorded it in 2025 Gordon took on the vocals and my brother produced an updated guitar solo. I was able to get a really accurate backing track as the original sequencing data was still all there on my old Atari STFM along with the Steinberg Pro24 sequencer that I had used to put it all together!

8.  In a way

This was a totally new song that was recorded in 2025 using a modern version of Logic Pro and a comprehensive MIDI set up with external synths including the Jupiter X, JD800, SE02 and Roland R70 drum machine. The song is about what love really is ...the balance between fantasy and reality and how relationships appear to others. Ultimately it asks the listener to reflect upon what the important elements really are when it comes to personal relationships.

9.  Don't let go

A completely new composition recorded in 2023 and then remastered for the 2025 release. Of particular note at the point this song was recorded is that I was still using a very old version of Logic. In fact it was the last version that would run on a PC and I was using an old Windows '98 based system! Shortly after completing this song I got hold of an old Mac Pro and started using the modern version Logic ...which was a bit of a revelation!

10. Starlit night

Another completely new composition utilising both external synths and also some of the wonderful soft synths available for Logic Pro. It was conceived as a very simple piano based song but in a slightly unusual, for me, time signature. However, in the end there was more going on in the background accompanying the main piano melody. The song is about how after a love lost there is always still the chance to find another, and reignite love from within oneself.

Our Career
& original song versions

"Our Career" was originally written and recorded in 1983 using the infamous cassette to cassette bouncing technique. There were no sequencers available so it was all played live and overdubbed with each bounce. The main instruments used were a Roland Dr55 drum machine, a Roland Juno 6 polyphonic synth and a Jen SX1000 mono synth. The only "outboard" gear available was a Melos analogue echo. The second incarnation of the song came in 1986 when we started to play live gigs, by that stage we had a better drum machine (Roland TR-707) and a polysynth with memories (Roland Juno 106). The most notable addition at that point was a Roland MC-202 sequencer, which allowed sequenced bass lines (Roland SH2) as well as sequenced lead lines using the inbuilt MC-202 mono synth, all synced with the drum machine. We also had a Casio CZ-101 adding further colour to our sound. Moving to the present version of the song, it was recreated using Logic and various soft synths as well as some of the original equipment. A few "risers" were included to enhance & polish this version and the lyrics were revised, but it is essentially the same song. Have a listen to the various versions ...and see for yourself!
